Pain Management Clinic
The Reactive Referral Center now offers a pain management clinic once a week.
Pain plays an important role in the health of our pets. And can often lead to behavioral changes. Unfortunately, as humans we are not great at understanding the ways our pets communicate pain. Oftentimes they do not vocalize their pain but instead let us know in more subtle ways. Little things like an abnormal gait or hesitation to do stairs can mean your pet is experiencing chronic pain. Unregulated pain can be detrimental to the longevity and quality of your pets life. Dr. Paukette will tailor a pain management protocol to fit each pet’s needs. Treatments may include:
Chiropractic Care:
Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (VSMT) is chiropractic adjustments for animals. An adjustment
is a high velocity low amplitude thrust onto a specific location of body. VSMT helps restore function and
mobility of the spinal column and joints. This improves neurologic communication throughout the body
which restores strength and helps with healing.
Acupuncture:
Acupuncture (AP) is a form of therapy used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been around
for over 2000 years. It involves the placement of needles into specific points on the body where nerve
endings, mast cells, blood vessels, and lymph vessels are present. There are hundreds of points that lie
along channels/meridians all over the body. When the points are needled it helps to move
Qi(chi)/energy through the body to treat many conditions and improve quality of life. Studies have
shown AP works by releasing beta-endorphins, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters to aid with pain
and healing. AP can be done as sole treatment or in conjunction with Western medicine. Some
conditions it can help with include: arthritis, IVDD, neurologic disorders, chronic pain conditions,
gastrointestinal disease, metabolic disease, incontinence, allergies, and behavior.
Laser Therapy:
The therapeutic laser, also known as cold laser, is the use of focused wavelengths of light to encourage tissue repair and relieve pain. The light energy interacts with cells, promoting cellular metabolism and increased blood flow to the treated area. This helps in reducing pain, swelling and promoting healing. Common uses for laser therapy are: Chronic arthritis, joint pain, wounds and surgical incisions.
Pharmaceuticals:
